University Graduate College Governance Policy
Spring 2010

1. Purpose
   
   

   The purpose of this document is to describe the implementation of the University Graduate College Governance Document (September 23, 2009) in the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing.

2. General Organization
   
   

   The Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing is the “academic unit” offering graduate degrees in the context of the Governance Document. The College Graduate Program Committees, Committee on Programs and then the General Faculty Assembly approve all new graduate course and new graduate program proposals and all matters related to changes in the graduate curriculum. The College Graduate Faculty Committee approves all Graduate Faculty nominations in the College. The Graduate Faculty Committee then forwards the approved Graduate Faculty nominations to the Dean of the College for approval.

   The College Graduate Faculty Committee consists of all college faculty members holding Graduate Faculty status. The committee elects the master’s program director or the doctoral program director as the chair of the College Graduate Faculty Committee.

   
   Appointment Criteria and Renewal of Faculty

   1. Following the University Graduate College Governance Document, Graduate Faculty may teach graduate courses, chair dissertation and capstone committees, serve on supervisory committees and the University Graduate Council, and vote on all matters relevant to graduate affairs at Florida Atlantic University.

      Graduate Faculty vote on program policies and procedures, curriculum changes, nomination for their college-wide University Graduate Council representative’s, and nominations for appointment and reappointment of their Graduate Faculty, Associate Graduate Faculty and Graduate Lecturers.

      A faculty member nominated for appointment as Graduate Faculty must meet the following minimum requirements:
      

      1. Hold the rank of Assistant Professor or above (clinical, research scientist/faculty, and affiliate research faculty inclusive). Under exceptional circumstances, faculty members with a comparable level of expertise may apply for status as Graduate Faculty
      2. Hold the terminal degree suitable for contributing to the program or show a comparable level of attainment through experience as determined by the Graduate Committee of the program;
      3. Be actively involved in scholarly or creative activity, graduate teaching or graduate mentoring.
      
      

      In the College of Nursing, the membership criteria described above and taken from Section II.C.1 of the Graduate College Governance Document will be applied without any additional criteria.
      Graduate Faculty members are appointed to five-year renewable terms.

   2. Following the University Graduate College Governance Policy, Associate Graduate Faculty may teach graduate courses, serve on or co-chair doctoral supervisory committees, or serve on masters and specialist degree supervisory committees.

      A faculty member nominated for appointment as Associate Graduate Faculty must meet the following minimum requirement:
      

      1. Hold the rank of Adjunct Faculty or above (visiting faculty inclusive);
      2. Hold the terminal degree suitable for contributing to the program or show a comparable level of attainment through experience as determined by the Graduate Committee of the program;
      3. Be actively involved in scholarly or creative activity or graduate teaching.
      
      

      In the College of Nursing, visiting faculty holding tenure track or tenured positions at their home institution may teach doctoral seminars or serve on dissertation committees.
      Associate Graduate Faculty members are appointed to five-year renewable terms.

   3. Following the University Graduate College Governance Policy, Graduate Lecturers may teach graduate level courses.

      A faculty member nominated for appointment as Graduate Lecturer must meet the following minimum requirements:
      

      1. Hold the rank of Instructor, Lecturer or above;
      2. Hold at least a master’s degree or professional degree or show a comparable level of attainment through experience as determined by the Graduate Committee of the program.

      In the College of Nursing, the membership criteria described above and taken from Section II.C.3 of the Graduate College Governance Document will be applied without any additional criteria.
      Graduate Lecturers are appointed to one-year renewable terms.

   4. Following the University Graduate College Governance Policy, Graduate Faculty Emeriti may retain the rights and privileges associated with their previous status as members of the Graduate Faculty.
      Graduate Faculty Emeriti are appointed to a five-year renewable term.
