Nhia Megargee's journey into nursing began during her recovery from an ACL injury when she witnessed health care professionals' knowledge, skills and dedication.

Now a Freshman Direct Admit student at Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing, Class of 2027, Nhia's passion for nursing is fueled by a profound desire to be there for her future patients in every aspect of their well-being.

She is pursuing a minor in health administration to understand the interconnectedness between nursing and healthcare administration, recognizing the importance of ensuring optimal patient care.

“I am dedicated to becoming a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist or Nurse Practitioner and confident that FAU’s nursing program will provide me with the knowledge, skills and support needed to excel in these advanced roles,” Nhia said.

A Lamplighter and Cross Country Healthcare Scholarship recipient, Nhia shared that being selected provided her with crucial financial support and offered invaluable emotional strength to fuel her dedication and scholarly pursuit.

At the College of Nursing, she intends to actively participate in student nursing organizations with initiatives aimed at community engagement and advocating for health care policies that prioritize equity and accessibility.

Nhia has always had a passion for aiding others but lacked a straightforward idea of what she wanted to do in life. After tearing her ACL playing soccer and spending a lot of time in the hospital during her recovery, she observed firsthand the expertise and unwavering commitment of nurses.

“It was also the peak moment of depression for me as I struggled to cope with changes in my physical abilities and lifestyle,” she said, adding that getting care and support from the nurses during that time in her life inspired her to pursue nursing as a career.

Nhia considers her grandmother, who did not work in the medical field but always cared for everyone's well-being, her mentor.

“My grandmother is selfless and hardworking and shaped me into who I am today,” she noted. “I am grateful to have developed a strong sense of empathy and a commitment to supporting others in their time of need, whether it's by lending a listening ear or offering physical care.”

Nhia volunteered at Bethesda Hospital as a Health Unit Coordinator Assistant and Food and Nutrition Assistant. In these positions, she learned to follow established procedures and requirements for safe food handling, kept records, responded to patient call lights and assisted in communication between patients and medical staff.

As a nurse, she hopes to carry forward the lessons and values imparted by her grandmother and make a positive difference for others.

“I want to be there for my future patients, ensuring their well-being physically, mentally, and emotionally as I am committed to advocating for my patients to execute the best plan of care for them,” Nhia shared.
