Daphne Young: Nursing Is One of The Most Selfless Jobs One Can Undertake

Inspired by her father's selfless dedication to health care, Daphne Young, a Freshman Direct Admit student at Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing, has embarked on a journey to pursue nursing as her lifelong calling.

Daphne’s minor is in Health Administration, and she plans to graduate in 2027. Her goal is to work in the ICU and secure a master's in nursing degree in the future.

Her initial interest in nursing was inspired by her father, a practicing doctor in the family’s native Philippines. Daphne noted that her parents’ decision to immigrate to the United States presented significant challenges. Despite her father’s position as a doctor, he would essentially be starting from scratch if they opted to move. Still, driven by the prospect of better opportunities for his children, he selflessly made the decision to bring his family to America.

“Understanding that he would need to dedicate countless hours to pursue a career in the medical field in the United States, my father’s unwavering determination allowed him to support his family, ultimately establishing a successful career in nursing,” Daphne said, adding that being surrounded by that relentless drive from childhood and witnessing her father’s ability to build something substantial from nothing was instrumental in her career choice.

“As an aspiring nurse, it is my duty to take advantage of every opportunity I am granted to ensure that I can develop my skills to benefit my future patients,” Daphne said.

She believes that nursing is more than just a career. It is a calling and one of the most selfless jobs one can undertake.

“I am so excited to embark on this journey of change and give my everything to this lifelong pursuit of knowledge and personal growth, and value the connections I make with each patient so their care is attuned to their individual health care needs,” she added.

Daphne is a Lamplighter Scholarship recipient and a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority on the Boca Raton campus. The sorority supports the Ronald McDonald House Charity, which gives her opportunities to volunteer and raise money for a great cause.
