Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) (Primary Care)
Introduction to the Family Nurse Practitioner Concentration

This concentration provides graduates with advanced practice role preparation, knowledge and skills in the care of children and adults across all ages within a family framework.  Health promotion, disease prevention and management of common acute and chronic long-term health alterations in primary care settings are the foci of this concentration.

The Family Nurse Practitioner curriculum requires a total of 43 credit hours (49 credit hours beginning Fall 2012). The program generally follows a part-time format of study.  The curriculum contains a minimum of 600 hours of required clinical practice, most of which may be arranged by the student in her or his own community.  Attainment of competencies may require more than 600 hours. Practicum experiences occur in health department clinics, private practice offices, HMO clinics, community-based health centers, hospital clinics and other settings providing primary health care.
Graduates of the Family Nurse Practitioner Program are eligible to sit for the Family Nurse Practitioner Certification Examination offered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP).

In keeping with Florida Atlantic University's philosophy as a distributed university, courses may be held on varying campuses over the program of study with various modes of delivery. This may include live classes/weekend format classes/TV classes/web-assisted classes/ and/or on-line offerings. Campuses include Boca Raton, Broward County/Davie, and the Treasure Coast.
*Live (on campus) courses are usually on Thursdays anytime between 8:00am and 8:00pm.  Most core courses are available online, in person, or by videoconference.
