If you want to go to a top-ranked graduate school, you have plenty of options right here in South Florida.
The 2018 U.S. News & World Report’s list of top graduate schools in the nation include Florida Atlantic University, Nova Southeastern University, Florida International University, the University of Miami, Barry University and Palm Beach Atlantic.
These schools are evaluated on such things as employment rates and starting salaries for graduates, standardized test scores of newly enrolled students, and reputation surveys by local employers and other colleges.
However, when it comes to undergraduate education, the region is not well represented in the top tier. Only UM has cracked the top 100 on that list, placing at 46th this year.
While FAU hasn't earned a spot on U.S. News’s undergraduate list, its master degree nursing program is ranked as the second best in Florida and the 45th best in the country.
The Christine Lynn College of Nursing was ranked 197th in 2011 but since then it has been involved in more research, which helped its ranking improve, saud Dean Marlaine Smith. It also got high marks from local hospitals and other nursing programs around the country, she said.
"I think we’ve had more visibility. We’ ve been really getting the word out about the quality of our faculty,” Smith said. “They’ve been featured in more presentations at national conferences.”
FAU also cracked the top 100 for its graduate programs in rehabilitation counseling (24) and public affairs (96).
Three NSU graduate programs were ranked among the country’s 100 best: physician assistant (40), occupational therapy (44) and pharmacy (77).
"We’ve created a health care education community with 29 different programs that are very popular and have been around a lot of years,” said Irv Rosenbaum, interim chancellor for NSU’s health professions division. “They’re all well regarded by students looking for graduate schools.”
NSU is making major investments into health education. It’s doctor of osteopathic medical program, which didn’t make the U.S. News list, has plans to expand onto a new campus in Tampa. The college also plans to start a new M.D. program in 2018. Its Davie campus will be the site of a new hospital as HCA Healthcare plans to relocate Plantation General Hospital.
NSU is one of two top ranked pharmacy programs in South Florida, the other being Palm Beach Atlantic University, a small Christian university in West Palm Beach, which has the 98th top ranked pharmacy program.
Barry University in Miami Shores ranked high for three of its programs: nursing anesthesia (94), physician assistant (81) and social work (78).
The top graduate programs at FIU in Miami, according to U.S. News, include nursing (56), health care management (57), public affairs (68) and law (100).
UM had by far the most top rated programs, with 17 on the U.S. News list. These include the medical school (48), the law school (77) and graduate programs for physical therapy (10), clinical psychology (25) and education (80).
These are South Florida’s graduate programs ranked among the top 100 in the country by U.S. News & World Report.
