Sigma International Honor Society of Nursing, was founded in 1922 by six nursing students at Indiana University Training School for Nursing located in the city of Indianapolis. Sigma has more than 135,000 active members who reside in more than 100 countries. Currently, there are 540 chapters at more than 700 institutions of higher education.

Sigma is recognized for its support of scholarship, excellence in nursing practice and funding opportunities in nursing research. In 1936, Sigma was the first organization in the United States to fund nursing research. Through Sigma’s commitment to professional development numerous educational offerings and products serve to advance learning to improve world-wide health.

Membership is by invitation to baccalaureate and graduate nursing students who demonstrate excellence in scholarship, and to nurse leaders exhibiting exceptional achievements in nursing. Membership encompasses nurses from all settings with 39% of active members hold advanced degrees, 51% in staff positions, 19% are administrators, 18% faculty/academics and 12 % in advanced practice.

Members have access to sigmanursing.org website for information on grants, scholarships, conferences, continuing education offerings, Sigma repository, career development, leadership, and peer reviewed publications.

Criteria is as follows:

SAME for undergrad, RN, Grad, and Nurse Leaders

 

Application

Students that qualify for membership, will be invited to apply. Nurse Leaders from the community must complete the following application "Sigma Community Nurse Leader application form" and submit to Dr. Rita Gengo at rgengoesilva2021@health.fau.edu
