Overview & Application Process
Welcome to the BSN Traditional Program
The traditional program in nursing is an upper division program in which students enter with 60 lower division credits or an Associates Degree. Lower division coursework can be completed at FAU or can be transferred from other universities or community colleges.
 
The program begins each May during summer session A. In the first year of the Program, students complete 12 academic credits during the summer sessions; 11 academic credits during the fall semester; and 13 academic credits during the spring semester. In the second year, students are off the summer semester.  Students complete 12 credits in the fall semester and 11 in the spring semester.

BSN Traditional Application Process
Thanks for your interest in the Traditional BSN Program. This program is offered at the FAU Boca campus. The next available program will start in May 2010. This is a limited access program.  Applicants need to complete four steps in applying to this program (each step is detailed below for you):
  1. Be admitted to FAU as a pre-nursing student by November 30, 2009.
  2. Submit your College of Nursing Undergraduate Application online by November 30, 2009. 
  3. Complete the HESI Entrance Exam - (refer below for more information).
  4. Complete all prerequisites on or before May 1, 2010.
 
1. Apply to FAU

Apply to FAU as soon as possible by filling out the FAU Undergraduate Online Application.  Admittance to FAU does not guarantee acceptance into the Accelerated Second-Degree BSN Program.  Specific program requirements can be found online in the FAU University Catalog on page 520. When filling out your application, you must:

    • Indicate nursing as your major
    • Indicate your start date is May
    • Send an official copy of your transcripts to the FAU Admissions Office
If you have an International Degree, you must also follow the directions at: http://www.fau.edu/admissions/intltransfer.php.
 
 
Complete the online application, making sure to include all requested information that applies to your program(s) of choice. Incomplete applications will not be considered for admission.
 
3. Register and take the HESI Entrance Exam
The HESI Entrance Exam is required for admission to this program. The test evaluates general knowledge in areas of Math, Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary, and Grammar.  The test results are part of the evaluation tools used to evaluate the qualifications of each applicant for admission.  Information about this test including registration and examination dates will be posted on the FAU Testing and Evaluation Page. It is your responsibility to check this site for the HESI Entrance Exam information or contact us if you are unable to locate the information on the website. You may only take the exam once each year. More information about the exam can also be found at www.hesitest.com.
 
  • For May 2010 start date: HESI tests are no longer being offerred
  • For May 2011 start date: HESI tests will be offered again in August-October 2010

4. Complete all prerequisites before the program begins
All prerequisites need to be completed before the program begins in May. You can take prerequisites through the Spring semester right up to the start date in May.  It is advantageous to have all Anatomy & Physiology courses and Microbiology courses completed by the end of the preceding Fall Semester. Admission Decision Factors
This is a limited-access program and we receive many more qualified applications than available spaces.  The key factors considered when making admission decisions include:
 
  • Prospective students MUST have a MINIMUM 3.0 GPA. 
  • Successful scores on the HESI Entrance Exam with a minimum of 80% in each category:  reading, grammar, vocabulary and math.
  • Completion of all prerequisite courses with a grade of "C" or better before the program starts. The prerequisite courses will be reviewed with the program advisor for credit approval.
