PhD Application Process
Official applications to graduate programs at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) start with the Graduate College.

Step 1: Complete a Florida Atlantic University Graduate Application. You must complete the FAU Graduate Application in order to obtain a Z Number.  A Z number is a student ID number used for identification purposes at FAU.  You will receive your Z number in about 2-5 days after completion of the FAU Graduate Application.

The status of your Graduate Application can be checked online: http://www.fau.edu/graduate/applyonline/applicationstatus/index.php

Step 2: Complete the College of Nursing Graduate Application.  The College of Nursing Application cannot be processed without your Z Number.  In addition, you will not be able to access this application until your FAU Graduate Application has been referred to the College of Nursing.   Applications are not referred until the Graduate College receives all previous college transcripts and payment of your application fee. Please wait at least 5 business days after receiving your Z Number before attempting to complete the College of Nursing Graduate Application.

If possible, please try to submit all supporting application materials at the same time to the PhD Coordinator for the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing (contact information is listed at the end of this webpage).  Application materials can be emailed or mailed. Letters of recommendation sent by email must come directly from the recommender and followed by a mailed hard copy with an original, written signature.  Further information about letters of reference is contained in the next section.

Guidelines Regarding Letters of Reference
Purpose: The purpose of the letters of reference is to provide the College of Nursing with information about how colleagues and associates perceive the applicants to the PhD program. Letters should be on letterhead stationery, dated, with the signature of the person and the person's name and title typed underneath. We are unable to accept letters older than 6 months from the date of application or letters that are not dated and official in appearance. An e-mailed reference or faxed letter must be followed with a mailed hard copy with a written signature.

The following points should be addressed in the letters of reference:

1.  How long has the referee known the applicant

2.  In what capacity the referee has known the applicant (e.g. manager, staff nurse,
     professor).

3.  Specify information about all of the following in reference to the applicant:

  • Initiative and critical thinking
  • Scholarly achievements and/or dispositions
  • Ability to complete tasks
  • Self-reflection and self-correction
  • Career orientation
  • Impression that the applicant will be able to achieve the PhD degree

References are faculty, colleagues, and associates who are qualified to address all characteristics listed above. They may be nurses, physicians, other health team members, administrators, or professors/instructors. One reference should be from a doctorally prepared faculty member from the master's program, if possible.

The letter of reference may be of any length. However, letters that are short may not provide the College with substantial information about the applicant. Thus, applicants should select referees who are able to address all the areas according to direct and first-hand knowledge.
