Biography

"My overall career mission has been to enhance nursing practice, education and scholarship through nursing theory, using both innovative and traditional means to improve care and advance the discipline. Over the past 10 years, I have been Principal Investigator for a program of grants and contracts to create and use a distinctive Community Nursing Practice Model. With colleagues, I've enjoyed the hard work, challenges and satisfactions of developing transdisciplinary School-based Community Wellness Centers devoted to health and social services for children and families from underserved multicultural communities, teaching university students from several disciplines, and developing research and policy to promote community well-being. As part of this work, I am the founding director of an academic center, the Quantum Foundation Center for Innovation in School and Community Well Being."

"Although I had been involved in teaching and consultation in Finland, England and Mexico, my Fulbright Scholar Award in 2001 stimulated an even fuller appreciation of global connections. Since that time, I have continued to teach, consult and engage in research with several universities in that wonderful country that has in many ways become another home for me. I have also been active in nursing education, research and practice with universities in the Philippines, Uganda, Hong Kong and Japan and have appreciated speaking and consulting in several other countries around the globe."

 "Living in West Palm Beach and being actively involved personally and professionally in South Florida offer multiple daily rewards! As an example, my husband and I have studied ceramics, creating with both hand building and the wheel----and doing our art in our garden, amid flowers and palm trees all year long! However, I grew up in the Kansas City area, and have dear family there, including our son and his family with two grand children. There are constant pulls to be more often in the beautiful heart land of our country."

Research

  • The distinctive Community Nursing Practice Model guides research and scholarship, adding to continuing development of the Model. Examples are: 1) the lived experience of nursing as nurturing wholeness of persons through caring, 2) developing and sustaining collaborating partnerships for integrated, interdisciplinary practice, 3) design and evaluation of caring-based practices, 4) developing and evaluating outcomes of practice based on the Model, and 5) evaluation and development of school and community health policy.
