Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) Overview

The Clinical Nurse Leader track at Florida Atlantic University is a 33 credit program leading to a Master of Science degree in Nursing and qualifications to sit for a Clinical Nurse Leader certification examination. Courses are provided by the FAU colleges of Nursing and Business, both of which are nationally accredited colleges.

The Clinical Nurse Leader track curriculum is a 33 semester hour part-time program designed to be completed in six (6) semesters. At the completion of coursework students are required to complete a 400 hour practicum working as Clinical Nurse Leaders in clinical partner sites. Students will be assigned a preceptor who will mentor them throughout this portion of the curriculum and will also take a supporting practicum seminar course.

Preceptor and practicum/clinical site decisions are determined in collaboration between faculty and students. Every effort is made to accommodate the practicum/clinical needs of students in various geographic locations.

FAU is authorized to offer online nursing programs in many states. Individual state authorization status is available online at http://fauelearning.com/fauonline/state-authorization/. Second MSN Degree Option

Applicants that have a MSN degree seeking specialization in another concentration requiring 30 credits or more to complete required courses in the new concentration should consider applying for a second MSN degree.  Second MSN degree applicants  should complete Step 1 and Step 2 of the application process by published deadlines.  A minimum of 30 credit hours is required to earn a second MSN  degree from FAU. 

Once accepted, a gap analysis will be completed to determine each student’s plan of study. Students must provide syllabi from other institutions for all transfer courses. 

PMC Option

Applicants with an MSN in a NP concentration seeking specialization in another NP concentration requiring less than 30 credit hours should consider applying for a Post Master’s Certificate (PMC).  

PMC applicants may be considered for a fall or spring admission and are accepted on a space available basis.

  1. PMC applicants submit a preliminary application along with a copy of all official academic transcripts, a current RN license, one (1) letter of recommendation, a statement of philosophy, and a current CV.
  2.  Once the College of Nursing reviews the preliminary application, applicants will be notified to complete the online non-degree FAU application.

Once applicant has been accepted into a concentration, a gap analysis will be completed to determine the required courses for each student. Based upon the gap analysis PMC applicants may be considered for a fall or spring admission and are accepted on a space available basis based on a space available bases and gap analysis and entry date will be determined.  Students must provide syllabi and/or course descriptions from other institutions for all transfer courses. Fall or spring admission may be considered.
