Sigma Theta Tau

Sigma Theta Tau, the International Honor Society of Nursing, was founded in 1922 by six nursing students at Indiana University. More than 405,000 nurse scholars have been inducted into Sigma Theta Tau. With 130,000 active members, it is the second largest nursing organization in the world. Members are active in more than 92 countries and territories. There are 451 chapters on college campuses in the United States, Australia, Botswana, Brazil, Canada, Ghana, Hong Kong, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Pakistan, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Swaziland, Sweden, Taiwan and Tanzania.

Sigma Theta Tau International is dedicated to improving the health of people worldwide by increasing the scientific base of nursing practice. In 1936, Sigma Theta Tau was the first organization in the United States to fund nursing research. Membership is by invitation to baccalaureate and graduate nursing students who demonstrate excellence in scholarship, and to nurse leaders exhibiting exceptional achievements in nursing.

Eligibility Requirements for Membership in STTI

Membership in Sigma Theta Tau International recognizes excellence in nursing scholarship and leadership. The organization offers valuable opportunities for professional development and other benefits. Criteria for membership is as follows:

Undergraduate Students

Must have completed one half of the nursing curriculum;
Have at least an overall GPA of 3.5 (based on a 4.0 grading scale).
Meet the expectation of academic integrity; and
Provide evidence of contributing to the overall good of the profession.

RN Students

Must have completed 12 credit hours at current school;
Have completed one-half of the nursing nurriculum;
Have at least an overall GPA of 3.5 (based on a 4.0 grading scale)
Meet the expectation of academic integrity; and
Provide evidence of contributing to the overall good of the profession.
NOTE: When applying, RN Students should use the Undergraduate Application Form.

Graduate Students

Must have completed one-fourth of the nursing curriculum;
Have at least a GPA of 3.5 (based on a 4.0 grading scale);
Meet the expectation of academic integrity; and
Provide evidence of contributing to the overall good of the profession.

Nurse Leaders

Must be a registered nurse, legally recognized to practice in his/her country;
Hold at least a baccalaureate degree in nursing or another field; and
Have demonstrated achievement in nursing.

Application

The application acceptance period for Sigma Theta Tau International, Iota Xi chapter begins in October of each year and ends in the last week of November. The induction is usually held every Spring semester. Click the link for complete information and application forms.
